San Miguel de Allende, formerly called San Miguel el Grande (San Miguel the Great), is named after two important personages in Mexican history, one Fray Juan de San Miguel, founder of the town and Ignacio Allende a hero in the Mexican Independence. San Miguel de Allende was founded in 1542 and is considered a National Monument due to its cultural and historic importance.
