Activities and Attractions in Mexico
WALKING ALONG GUANAJUATO
Walking through its steep, narrow streets is an excellent
way to explore this city that has managed to preserve
its traditional flavor through its buildings and activities.
Some of its main attraction include the Jardín Unión,
the Teatro Juárez, the Templo de San Diego, Plaza
de la Paz, Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato,
Palacio Legislativo, Templo de la Compañía,
Mansión del Conde de Rul, the University of Guanajuato,
the Templo y Plazuela de San Roque, Callejón del
Beso, Plaza de Baratillo, Plaza de San Fernando, Presa de
la Olla, Monumento al Pípila and the Jardin del Cantador. DOWNTOWN GUANAJUATO
The Guanajuato Downtown is built at the bottom of a steep
canyon, so the streets are winding and best explored on
foot. Vehicles are prohibited from the center, and instead
move through the Subterraneo, an underground street that
replaced an old sewer system. CALLEJONEADAS OF GUANAJUATO
This is a tradition started in 1962 in which young people
dress up in old Spanish costumes and tour the streets
and alleys (callejón) of Guanajuato singing songs.
Since then, this activity takes place almost daily but
mostly on weekends. This tradition is supported by the
university, which includes and organizes “callejoneadas” for the
International Cervantino Festival. THE INTERNATIONAL
CERVANTINO FESTIVAL
The beautiful architecture in Guanajuato is the backdrop
for the organizational activity for this important cultural,
tourist event. The Festival takes place during two weeks
in October and consists of concerts by musical bands and
soloists, as well as shows by internationally famed dance
and theater troupes. This is one of Mexico's premier festivals.

CALLEJÓN DEL
BESO (ALLEY OF THE KISS)
Romantic spot in Guanajuato that consists of two balconies
separated by just 68 cm and famous for the love story
after which it was named.
EX HACIENDA OF SAN
GABRIEL DE LA BARRERA
Beautiful hacienda that boasts sixteen well kept gardens
and a small museum, standing opposite a chapel with a
striking Spanish Gothic altarpiece, located on Km 2.5
on the old road to Marfil at.
PiPILA’S MONUMENT
Built in honor of Juan José de los Reyes Martinez,
nicknamed El Pípila, who enabled the Alhóndigas
de Granaditas to be captured by covering his back with
a heavy stone, crawling up to the entrance and setting
fire to it. The monument commands a superb view of the
city.
CERAMICS AND HANDCRAFTS
OF GUANAJUATO
Guanajuato is renowned for its pottery and ceramics, as
well as its stonework. Its traditional handicrafts markets
contain the work of Guanajuato’s traditional artisans
who produce pottery, ceramics, silverware, sculptures
and candy figures as well as many other unusual forms
of craftwork. One of the most interesting is the Mercado
Hidalgo, which carries an astonishing range of handicrafts.
DE LA COMPAÑiA
TEMPLE OF GUANAJUATO
Construction of this Jesuit church with its Churrigueresque
facade was begun in 1747 and completed in 1765. The paintings
in the interior were recently restored.
SAN ROQUE’S TEMPLE
AND PLAZA OF GUANAJUATO
This church with its sober baroque facade dates from 1726.
Since 1953, the Entremeses Cervantinos that gave rise
to the famous International Cervantino Festival have been
performed in the square.
PLAZA OF BARATILLO
IN GUANAJUATO
Named after the market that used to held on Sundays, where
traders used to hawk their wares. The center of the square
contains a Florentine fountain, visitors spot for a nice
rest.
SAN FERNANDO PLAZA
This peaceful spot is ideal for taking a rest after a
good lunch at one of the nearby restaurants, from where
there is a view of an old cantera stone fountain, and
balconies with flowerpots. It also has shops selling handicrafts
such as ceramics. The local book fair is held in this
plaza once a year.
THE HIDALGO MARKET
OF GUANAJUATO
This building was inaugurated by President Porfirio Diaz
in 1910, and here, you can buy handicrafts such as multicolored
kitchen utensils made of glazed clay, all of which come
from the state of Guanajuato. You can also buy other little
works of art that are delicious to eat: candy in the form
of figures of charros (Mexican cowboys) and mummies, whose
eyes are made with small raisins.

OF GUANAJUATO
Some of the best places to eat in Guanajuato are the restaurants
around the beautiful Plaza de San Fernando that serve
either traditional Mexican or international fare. At other
international restaurants around the city you can savor
specialties such as fillet of sole with dried fruit sauce
as well as delicious French cuisine. Guanajuato is full
with great meals of the typical Mexican cuisine. When
you visit Guanajuato don’t miss going to the small
home-style cooking restaurants, where you will enjoy the
pure Mexican food essence.
GOLF IN GUANAJUATO
Although the topographical features of Guanajuato City
make it difficult to build golf courses, you can enjoy
a game of golf in the nearby cities of Celaya, León
and Irapuato.

This country club is located in the city of León.
The golf course has 9 holes and it offers a variety of
